Effective Mission Statements

Here is an interesting thought about mission statements and visions. For most companies these statements are long and lofty. They espouse devotion to customers, quality, employees, the environment and whatever else is deemed important. Do these long statements provide guidance to their employees?

Try this mission statement on for size. It’s from a blanket and bed clothing manufacturer.

Fabrico, Purveyors of warmth and comfort since 1895.

What does it say to you?

  1. It seems to me that a mission statements are something left to interpretation.

Long and over written mission statements can leave the reader wondering what the true meaning really is and shorter statements can sometimes be interpreted as something other than what the company means.

Take the mission statement from above as an example. Does this company only provide warmth and comfort when in fact a hug on a tough day or a warm meal can duplicate the same feels as this company is inferring.

I think this is a common issue with mission statements and in most cases you are damned if you do and damned if you don't in terms of length and fulling explaining yourself and company.
